Crunch into a healthy smile with apples!

Fall is here, and that means it’s the perfect time for apples, and this past Saturday, September 17th, was Eat an Apple Day!

Apples are great because they can help regulate blood sugar, are a great source of dietary fiber, and they have a minimal calorie count, despite their sugary taste! This makes them a great, healthy snack for your overall health, but did you know they are good for your mouth too?

Apples work as a semi-toothbrush. The fiber in the peel works as a stimulant to your gums, while it lightly brushes your teeth and tongue. The texture and flavor also work to produce saliva, which helps rinse away bacteria and freshen your breath! Apples are mildly acidic, however, so it is best to pair them with something high in calcium to counter the acidity, such as cheese or milk. We also recommend you rinse your mouth lightly with water after eating acidic foods and waiting at least half an hour to brush your teeth so you do not weaken any enamel.

Apples won’t replace brushing your teeth, but they can help you freshen your mouth in between meals when brushing isn’t an option. You should always brush your teeth at least two times each day for two minutes each time, along with flossing. As usual, make sure to visit your dentist every six months! Give us a call to schedule your appointment today at 216-325-9755!

And don’t forget to check out some of these apple orchards in Northeast Ohio!
