Your dentist knows how important flossing is for good oral health, and you probably know about the benefits of flossing, too. But do you know how to floss properly? It can be tricky, but with a little practice and the right information, you can floss like a professional—and make your dentist proud.

Wrap about 18 inches of floss around each middle finger until there are one to two inches remaining in the middle. With the floss held tightly, carefully and gently slide it between the teeth using an up-and-down motion—never snap it into place. Guide the floss under the gum line and curve it around the base of each tooth. Gently slide it back out from between the teeth and move to the next set. Unwind and re-wrap the floss to ensure you have a clean surface for each new area.
