Tips for a Healthy Cook Out

The Labor Day challenge we all must face: potato salad, burgers, ribs, the dogs and everything else wonderfully delicious offered in a buffet style line up that would test even the will power of fitness super star Jillian Michaels. The only thing that looks remotely healthy is the garnishes! You are just a regular person with a lot of tasty food tempting you on Labor Day weekend, and it can be so difficult to not give in to succulent steaks, tangy pasta salad, and… okay, I guess we’re not helping.

As you take the time to enjoy the long weekend, you should also consider small steps to make it a slightly healthy weekend as well. This doesn’t mean you have to keep to your regular health goals 100%, but these small steps will let you indulge without overdoing it.

Easy Steps to Enjoy a Healthy Cook Out

  1. Small Portions/Share
It is tempting to eat way too much at a cook out. After all, everyone else seems to be pigging out and peer pressure is a real thing! Instead of going with the crowd, try to have smaller portions or even share with someone. Smaller portions/sharing allow you to try a little bit of everything without overdoing it.
  2. Plan Out What You Want to Eat
When you have cook out fever, it is easy to lose track of exactly how many burgers you’ve ingested. Make a plan of exactly what you want to eat and stick to it. Resist going back for seconds (and thirds, fourth, fifths, etc.)!
  3. Remember Your Dental Health!
We at Hudec Dental in Cleveland, Ohio wanted to remind everyone to mind their dental health this labor day. After you finish eating at the cook out, brush and floss your teeth just like after every meal!
  4. Host Your Own Cook Out
When you make the menu, you can serve healthy foods. Opt for things like chicken, salad, fruit and other healthier option than the regular cook out menu. Your friends and family may still like you even if you don’t’ serve them burgers at a cook out.
  5. Bring Something Healthy

Let your host know first, but mostly everyone appreciates an added dish or two. This will allow you to enjoy healthier options without putting any extra pressure on the host of the cook out.

Stay Healthy This Labor Day

Above all make sure to enjoy yourself this Labor Day. Just remember, you don’t need to live an unhealthy lifestyle to have fun! Eat well, laugh lots and brush thoroughly!

-Happy Labor Day from the Staff at Hudec Dental in Cleveland, Ohio!
